trail dog

I am most definitely a dog person. However, I know my limits and I know that I have too much going on to own a dog. That's why I love that now that the pandemic has calmed down (at least locally), I can once again borrow my most favorite dogs for a week here or there.

Harbor is currently visiting and has always been my favorite trail dog. She loves being outside and just looks like she belongs out in the woods exploring. I've known her since she was a puppy. Her owner, Aaron, is a colleague of mine and he started bringing her to the office as soon as he got her. Her name is Harbor because they used to live on a boat. We immediately hit it off. It sounds silly, but I consider her to be my spirit animal (even though thankfully, she is still alive and well). Sometimes when I'm out alone running the trails, I picture her leading the way in front of me. She's always up ahead, but looks back often to make sure I'm still behind her. This morning, I took her on her favorite loop at our local trail at Mountain Lakes. She even remembered most of the turns even though she hasn't been here for about 3 and a half years.

Right after she took a dip in the lake. Mucky legs.

Before COVID, Aaron, Kim and Harbor moved to the UK, so we didn't see her for a many years. I saw her a couple of times when I was out in Montclair when they eventually moved back, but the kids have been dying to see her again. I was afraid Harbor wouldn't recognize them, but it was like old times. She greeted them excitedly and in true Harbor fashion licked their entire faces. It has been a wonderful week of hikes at all of our favorite places and the kids having fun taking her out, feeding her treats and lounging around with Harbor's head in their laps. By now, she's an old lady, so she can't run like she used to. But it's still great to get out early with her and have some company out on the trails.

I feel like one day, I'd like to have a trail dog. I wish it could be guaranteed that I'd get a dog with Harbor's temperament. She loves the outdoors and is very disciplined. She's terrified of being left alone, so will never wander off without having me in her sight. She also does very well off-leash and comes over if I see people/other dogs and need to leash her.

We all love you, Harbor and will be missing you when you go home tomorrow!
