the great outdoors and time with friends

I'm a little pressed for time today and my typing is noticeably slower because I did some challenging climbs this afternoon. Some climbs with super thin holds and 2 overhanging climbs that left my arms fully pumped. So, I'll focus on just one thing I'm grateful for from today.

Wild, beautiful outdoor spaces have always left me in awe. I'm so grateful that I have many of such spaces steps away from my home and just short drives away. Today, my daughter and I met up with friends at Duke Farms for a couple hours of biking. My friend Will is probably the only person I still keep in touch with from my undergrad time at Rutgers. When we were freshmen, we lived in the same dorm. Will lived directly across the hall from me. It's so funny that many years later, we both ended up living in Princeton. Our daughters started kindergarten at the same school and their cubbies ended up right next to each other. Now our daughters are super close, so play dates allow us to hang out some weekends. Peer pressure is great when the kids are doing something hard, like biking up a big hill. There's much less or zero whining.

With fall foliage around the corner, I'm sure we will be planning some family hikes with the kids' friends. I'm very grateful that the kids have formed some very strong friendships and that as a result, we get to plan some fun outdoor activities to hang out. I tend to be a bad friend most of the time, but that's something I want to change. It's mostly work and generally being busy that steals time away from nurturing friendships. Training also sucks up a lot of time, but it's no excuse. Friendships are too important and I need to start being a better friend.

This morning's run was an easy 5 miles that included 3 hill repeats up Washington. My heart rate stayed aerobic for most of the run and I practiced power hiking with my trekking poles on the steeper past of Washington. It's been a wonderful recovery week. Total mileage was about 17 miles and I'm not running tomorrow. Instead, I get to go on a morning walk. Really looking forward to a quiet Sunday morning walk and catching up with Lee.
