the dipsea trail

I guess most people would put their feet up and relax the day after a 50K, but Sunday was our last full day in the Bay area. Chris was on a late red eye so we had the entire day for another adventure. I have heard of the Dipsea Trail and I knew that the race had just happened a couple of weeks ago. Even though it was a lot of climbing (about 2,000 ft over a little over 7 miles) I really needed to do it. Chris was hobbling a bit and my quads were sore, but we had all day, so we just took it slowly. Took a Lyft to the trailhead stairs in Mill Valley and spent the next few hours making our way to Stinson beach. The best part was that we could take a slight detour off of the Dipsea Trail to go through Muir Woods. Those red woods sure are majestic.

Just the first of many sets of stairs along the Dipsea Trail

It would be cool to spectate the race, but after hiking the trail, I don't ever need to run it!

Those red woods are so freakin' cool

We enjoyed the 2 mile hike through Muir Woods and then continued onto the Dipsea Trail which passed through Mount Tamalpais State Forest. It was a cool mix of landscapes, from open single track trails, through damp forest, red woods, trails with views of hills and ocean and a lot of stairs up and down.

Stinson Beach

Little did we know that a challenge lay ahead of us when we tried to get back from Stinson Beach to the city. We had reveled in the fact that we completed our hike and snacked on fries, chips and salsa with avocado next to the beach. We had to of course go onto the beach. Chris took a short nap and then I tried to call a Lyft. That’s when we realized there were no drivers and very little reception. My phone had been on AllTrails all day, so the battery was low. Thankfully, Chris still had almost full battery. We ended up having to take the bus to Sausalito and then an Uber back to our Airbnb. We waited for about an hour for the bus and the bus ride was another hour, but we really couldn’t complain because the bus ride only costed $5 for the both of us. Finally making it back to the Airbnb, it was already 8:30 EST so we FaceTimed the kids and then ate leftovers. Chris left around 8 for his commute to the airport and I had an early night.

Now on the plane back to Newark, the last few days feel like they flew by. So happy we were able to come out to such a beautiful place and experience the Headlands just using our own two feet. Missing the kids and looking forward to this short week before Thanksgiving. I have a lot to be grateful for.
