start running even before you start running

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

Anyone can start running. You don't need a fancy pair or shoes or a fancy watch or any of the gear. In fact, the best way to start running with good form is to run barefoot on a track or a grassy field. Start by running 10 minutes at a time until you dial in good form. Watch this video for some tips on a natural style of running. Rewild Running

Some key takeaways:

1. Land on your entire foot. You might imagine a subtle motion of rolling from the outside of your foot inward as you land. If you can find a place to run barefoot, you will pick up this motion and how it’s supposed to feel because you’ll be forced to land softly.

2. Land with your feet underneath your body. Don’t over-stride, which will result in landing on your heel with the landing force going straight to your knees and hips.

3. Think about pulling your feet up with your glutes/hamstrings to minimize the time your feet spend on the ground.

4. Run with a high cadence – you can download a metronome app on your phone – the one I like is called Pulse and set it for 172 to start. Work your way up to between 176-182 steps per minute (spm).

5. Keep your arms tight to your body and keep the swing relaxed with your arms making right angles at the elbows

6. Keep your shoulders back and lean slightly forward with your back straight. It might help to think that you’re wearing a belt and someone is pulling you forward with a rope attached to the belt.

7. Keep your gaze about 5 yards in front of you, looking straight ahead. Don’t look down at your feet.
